Leadership of the St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Society in Accra has expressed support to the recent statement made by the Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, regarding the Church’s position on Freemasonry.

On January 26, 2025, Archbishop Kwofie addressed the faithful, clarifying that the Catholic Church’s stance on Freemasonry have not changed, stating that freemasonry is incompatible with Christian beliefs and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

In a statement issued by Dame Obaapanin Gloria Peggy Kwasie, Grand National President and   1st Accra Archdiocesan President of the St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Society, they expressed their unwavering solidarity with the Archbishop’s stance.

“We, the leadership and members of the St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Society in Accra, therefore echo the statement of the Archbishop of Accra that Freemasonry contradicts the teachings of the Catholic Church and that the Church hasn’t changed her position regarding her teachings on Freemasonry.

In their statement, they acknowledged the Archbishop’s catechesis which enlightened both Catholics and non-Catholics about the Church’s unchanging position on Freemasonry and affirmed their commitment to ensuring that all members remain in full communion with the Church and adhere strictly to its teachings.

“Indeed, the position of the Catholic Church on Freemasonry is very explicit. With this in-depth catechesis by the Chief Shepherd in his letter to the people of God, the leadership of the St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Society in the Accra Archdiocese wish to assure our Archbishop that we would make strenuous efforts to ensure our members are in full communion with the Church and “not serve two masters”.

Additionally, they have stated that they would ensure that their members to remain vigilant in their adherence to the Church’s doctrine and include “the social teachings of the Church, especially on the position of the Catholic Church on Freemasonry, part of our programme this year and beyond.”

The statement ended by encouraging their members “to submit themselves wholly to the authority and teachings of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. ”
