Stop Stigmatising COVID-19 Victims – Archbishop Kwofie

Must read

The Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, Most. Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie has asked Ghanaians to desist from stigmatizing COVID-19 victims.

He made the appeal when a delegation of the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary of St. John International (KSJI)  recently made a GH¢30,000 donation to the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) to assist the Church equip its health facilities across the country.

According to the Archbishop, it was rather unfortunate that victims of coronavirus suffer trauma of stigmatization.

“Nobody goes out to buy Coronavirus, nobody goes out to embrace Coronavirus. It has no respect for age, you could be young, you could be old. It has no respect for money, you could be having all the money in the world or you could be the poorest in the world. It does not matter whether you are a believer or not, we are all at risk”, he lamented.

Archbishop Kwofie, admonished all Christians to exhibit the Christian virtue of mercy to their fellow human beings irrespective of their religion during this unusual period of COVID-19.

“It is time for Christians to show mercy rather than stigmatizing people. Someone has just been quarantined and everybody goes away from the person” he stated.

He again added, it was important to be cautious but cautiousness did not mean stigmatizing the victims.

Just as Jesus Christ was a friend of the lepers, we should all learn from His example.

He also advised that we should all unite to fight against COVID-19 by accepting that the victims are part of our society.
