The National Teaching Council (NTC) has commenced a workshop for Compliance Officers from Ashanti, Central, Western, Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta Regions of Ghana. The programme which is taking place in Kumasi opened on Thursday, March 7, 2024 and is expected to end on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
Opening the programme, the Registrar of NTC, Dr. Christian Addai-Poku gave a brief background on the National Teachers Standards (NTS) as captured in the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 and the need for its full implementation.
He underscored that NTS represents the first ever collectively agreed standards to guide teacher preparation and practice in the country.
The Standards have been developed as a professional tool to guide teacher educators, teachers, student teachers and other stakeholders in education to identify in clear and precise terms what teachers are expected to know and be able to do; qualities they are expected to possess and behaviour they are supposed to exhibit.
He said the Standards set clear baseline of expectations for the professional knowledge, practice, conduct, attitude, rights, and obligations expected of teachers working in schools at the pre-tertiary level.
He called on the Compliance Officers to provide support to teachers to enhance the professional status and refrain from using their position to lord over the teachers. He also implored them to collect credible information from the field which can be used to inform future decisions.
The Compliance Officers will from 18th March to 29th March, 2024 visit second cycle institutions (public and private) in Ashanti, Central, Western, Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta Regions to collect data.
The Council called on second-cycle institutions in the Ashanti, Central, Western, Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta Regions of Ghana to fully cooperate with the Officers.
