In a remarkable display of intellectual prowess and determination, 14-year-old Ghanaian Catholic, Philip Selikem Amoako, has emerged as Ghana’s youngest National Chess Champion.
This talented Catholic youth has captured the hearts of many with his inspiring story of faith, perseverance, and dedication.
Selikem’s journey to the top began with a simple passion for chess. Encouraged by his family and fueled by his natural talent, he spent countless hours honing his skills and studying the game. His hard work paid off when he won the national championship, outmaneuvering opponents thrice / four times his age.
What sets Selikem apart, however, is his commitment to his Catholic faith. According to his family, Selikem’s faith has been a constant source of strength and inspiration throughout his journey.
His parents Dennis Amoako and Dr. Emefa Amoako, who are devout Catholics, have instilled in him the values of discipline, perseverance, and humility.
“Selikem’s achievement is not just about winning a championship,” said his proud father. “It’s about the values he’s learned along the way – values that will stay with him for the rest of his life,” state his parents.
They added: “As a Catholic family, we celebrate Selikem’s achievement as a testament to the power of faith and perseverance. His story serves as a reminder that with dedication and hard work, our youth can achieve greatness.”
Selikem’s plans for the future are ambitious. He hopes to represent Ghana in international chess competitions and use his platform to promote the game among young people.
With his faith, family, and natural talent guiding him, there’s no doubt that Selikem will continue to make waves in the world of chess.
Selikem’s achievement has earned him recognition from the Ghana Chess Association and an invitation to participate in international chess tournaments.
He is an active member of his Parish, St. Thomas Aquinas, University of Ghana, Legon and Our Lady of Assumption, (OLA), New Achimota, and participates in various community service projects and youth groups.
Selikem’s family credits his Catholic education for instilling in him the values of discipline and perseverance that have contributed to his success.
As a talented and dedicated individual, he has made a name for himself in the world of chess at from 9 years.
Notably, he became the first Ghanaian to win a medal at the All Africa Youth Chess Games, and he was also the first Ghanaian chess player to receive the prestigious National SWAG Award Medal at 11 years old.
Selikem’s experiences have not only honed his skills but also broadened his horizons. He has had the privilege of meeting almost all the top world-class chess players, including the world number one, Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, world number 2 , world number 3 -Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and other top players.
In fact, he was part of the memorable ceremonial move between these two chess giants at the London Chess Classics.
Beyond chess, Selikem is also an athletic enthusiast. He trains with some of the national athletic team, under the guidance of two experienced coaches.
He loves playing long tennis too. This unique combination of intellectual and physical pursuits has helped shape Selikem into a well-rounded and driven individual.
