Catholic Archbishop of Accra Addresses Nurses’ Strike, Urges Them to Prioritise Human Health

Must read

The Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, has urged nurses and midwives to prioritize human health despite their genuine challenges.

Archbishop Kwofie said this during his pastoral visit to the St. Charles Lwanga Parish at Abeka on June 15, 2025, where he expressed worry over the implications the recent industrial action by nurses and midwives had caused.

According to him, “no well meaning Christian who values the human person and the dignity of human life supported” the industrial action.

Archbishop Kwofie also noted that, in spite that the strike was suspended on Friday,  June 13, 2025, the industrial action could have been executed properly which would have prevented some “unnecessary” suffering to families.

He stated, “Nurses and Midwives may go on an industrial action, but it must be well-planned and well-executed; not allowing innocent mothers, fathers and children suffer unnecessarily”

He emphasised the importance of ensuring that health facilities remain working due to the fact that strikes by essential workers affect both the work at the hospitals and the lives of those who depend on their services.

Additionally, he asked: “What will happen if a portion of them go on strike and allow others to work? They will still be on strike and their voices will be heard”.

The Archbishop also urged healthcare professionals to consider the impact of their actions on patients, saying, “Imagine the number of people who could have been saved but lost their lives? Please, for our sake and for the dignity we have, you must hasten slowly.”
