Directors of the Department of Social Communication (DEPSOCOM) from across Catholic Dioceses in Ghana have gathered at the Pastoral and Social Centre, Goaso Diocese, in the Ahafo Region for their Annual General Meeting that will run from April 27 to 30, 2026.
The meeting, which saw the arrival of participants on April 27, officially began with Holy Mass on April 28, celebrated by the Most Rev. Peter Kwaku Atuahene, Bishop of Goaso Diocese.
In a homily during the Mass, the Bishop challenged the Communication Directors to be interested in, and intentional about getting themselves abreast of current events, to be better placed to transmit the information to the communities they serve. He referred to the four astronauts who recently went on a space expedition, and who returned to share their experiences, glorifying God in his wonder of creation, urging the Directors, who are also meant to be using modern science to share the faith, to research more on the topic and possibly project some of the photos and narratives brought by the astronauts, from their expedition, as a means of teaching the society about the wonders of creation through the eyes of Science.
According to Bishop Atuahene, it is the shared duty of the Priests, Religious and Lay faithful to help people appreciate God through their immediate surroundings, and they must all cultivate the habit of listening through the Sacraments, Liturgical celebrations, and conformity to the Will of God, upholding that once they can listen and appreciate the beautiful creation, their response will automatically be a sense of awe, which will help them to humble themselves, love one another, and protect whatever God has given them.
He further reiterated that the works of the Communicators must point towards the beauty of God’s creation.
Acknowledging the deficiency in most of the Diocesan DEPSOCOM offices, especially in terms of gadgets, the prelate encouraged the Directors to make use of their available resources, and employ the social media as a tool to intensify Church teachings and catechesis, maintaining that even with the little they have, they could still do something to be able to propagate the faith and be contemporary witnesses, who would bring people to listen to the voice of Christ, the Good Shepherd.
He extended a warm welcome to the Directors, whom he was meeting for the very first time since his appointment as Episcopal Chairman for DEPSOCOM, and wished them well in their deliberations.
In a welcome address, Rev. Fr. Dieu-Donne Kofi Davor, Executive Secretary of DEPSOCOM at the National Catholic Secretariat, Ghana, commended the participants for their massive turnout and encouraged them to, as much as possible, find time to rest during the period of the meeting before they return to their busy schedules.
A moment of silence was observed by all participants for the eternal repose of the soul of Rev. Fr. Isaac Abanyie, who would have been one of the facilitators at the meeting, but was snatched by the cold hands of death before the meeting.
The Executive Secretary extended greetings and words of encouragement from the Very Rev. Fr. Clement Kwasi Adjei, Secretary General of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the National Catholic Secretariat, and then took participants through the programme for the meeting; Day 1 featured mainly the presentation of reports from the various Dioceses.
Other activities will include a presentation on Digitalization, discussions around the 60th World Communications Day, 2026, sharing of experiences and suggestions on how to improve the Communication Apostolate in Ghana, among others.
