Prez Mahama, First Lady to Open Historic World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra as Ghana Hosts World for First Time in 115 Years

Must read

Over 100 Nations Storm Accra Oct 14-16 For Biggest Assemblies of God Gathering Ever Held in Africa.

The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Mrs. Lordina Mahama will open the 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra on October 14, 2026, in what will be the first time the global church meets on African soil in its 115-year history.

General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, announced this at a press conference at the National Headquarters to begin the two-week countdown to the Congress.

Mahama’s Uncommon Support

Rev. Wengam disclosed that President Mahama, who is a committed member of Assemblies of God, Ghana, has given tremendous support behind the scenes.

“It is common knowledge that the President is a member of Assemblies of God, Ghana. What is uncommon is his tremendous support for the World Congress,” he told journalists.

He confirmed that both the President and the First Lady, also a member of the church, will grace the opening ceremony at the Black Star Square. Eighteen Ministers of State and several high-profile personalities have also confirmed participation.

Why Ghana? Why Now?

The World Congress was last held in 2023 in Madrid, Spain. Ghana’s hosting rights followed a strong proposal by the then Chairman of the Africa Assemblies of God Alliance and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Tanzania, Rev. Barnabas Mtokambali.

Rev. Wengam said Ghana “plucked up divine faith to do the unthinkable” and God has rallied to the church’s aid.

To execute the massive assignment, the church inaugurated a Local Organizing Committee in 2024 chaired by Greater Accra East Regional Superintendent, Rev. Andrews Nelson Awintia, and a World Congress Secretariat headed by Mrs. Gifty Agyei-Fiankoh.

100 Nations, One Mandate

More than 10,000 delegates from over 100 countries are expected. They include Global Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Singapore, Rev. Dominic Yeo, global leaders from all continents, and former Malawi President H.E. Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who is a former General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Malawi.

Rev. Wengam said the influx will be a major boost for tourism, hospitality, transport, food vending and small businesses.

The Historic Facts Behind The Church

Rev. Wengam gave startling statistics to underline the significance:

– With 89.9 million members and about 451,000 local branches, Assemblies of God is the largest Protestant church and fastest-growing denomination in the world.
– 20 million of its members are in Africa – now described as the growth and revival centre of the church.
– Every 62 minutes, an Assemblies of God church is planted somewhere in the world.
– Every 54 seconds, someone is converted through an Assemblies of God ministry.
– There are more than 10 times as many Assemblies of God churches as McDonald’s restaurants worldwide.
– The largest single local church in the world is an Assemblies of God church – Yoido Full Gospel Church in South Korea with 800,000 members.
– Assemblies of God traces its roots to the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles, USA in 1906.
– In Ghana alone, the church has 10,077 local branches with over 1.2 million members.

Theme And Programme

The Congress theme is COMMISSIONED: One Mandate, Every Nation – a call to plant at least one million churches by 2033 to mark 2000 years of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, dubbed the MM33 Agenda.

Morning sessions (9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.) will be held at the Black Star Square in a specially built temporary auditorium, as no existing facility in Ghana can host 10,000 delegates at once. Evenings will switch to free, inter-denominational revival rallies at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Billed to minister at the World Congress are Joe Mettle, Sinach, Dunsin Oyekan, Rev. Angela Donadio (USA), Gramophone Chorale and a 500-member Congress Mass Choir.

A Call To The Media

Quoting the Agenda Setting Theory and Malcolm X on the power of the media, Rev. Wengam appealed to editors, reporters, producers, bloggers and commentators to saturate the offline and online spaces with edifying content on the Congress.

“This is not a mere church event but a global assignment which must be executed with all-consuming seriousness,” he said, inviting all Ghanaians to participate.

The World Congress runs from 14th to 16th October, 2026.
