Bishop Herman College (BIHECO) at Kpando in the Volta Region has booked the final slot in the quarter-final stage of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) 2026 after a dramatic tie-breaker victory over Asanteman SHS and Opoku Ware School.
In what has been described as one of the most thrilling contests of the One-Eighth Stage, the Kpando-based Catholic Boys College showed resilience and composure to edge out their Ashanti Region rivals.
At the end of regulation time at the Centre for National Culture (CNC), both Bishop Herman College and Asanteman SHS were tied at 43 points each, while two-time champions (1997 & 2002) Opoku Ware School (OWASS) had 31 points.

The tie forced the contest into a nerve-wracking tie-breaker. After a grueling battle, BIHECO held their nerves to clinch 3 more points to seal qualification.
Final Score After Tie-Breaker:
– Bishop Herman College (BHC): 46 pts
– Asanteman SHS: 43 pts
– Opoku Ware School (OWASS): 31 pts
It was a heartbreaking exit for Asanteman SHS, who matched BIHECO point-for-point but fell short at the final hurdle, and for Opoku Ware School, who had been tipped as favourites.
Bishop Herman College will now mount the NSMQ stage on Tuesday, 1st September, 2026, for the Quarter-Final contest against Accra Academy and University Practice SHS.
Old Boys of the Bishop Herman Old Boys Union (BHOBU) across year groups have expressed joy and excitement over this victory. According to the Old Boys, this victory is more than just qualification – BIHECO has officially regained its seeded status, and that was the minimum target for the Catholic Boys Senior High School.
The President of the BHOBU STEM Foundation, Mr. Lawrence Adoboe, has expressed appreciation to all old boys, students, staff, and supporters who rallied behind the team.
