President Akufo-Addo Announces Another Week Extension of Partial Lockdown Amid COVID-19

President Nana Akuffo Addo has stated that the partial lockdown of Greater Accra, Greater Kumasi and Kasoa metropolitan areas and it’s contiguous districts have been extended by one more week which is subject to review.

Addressing the nation for the sixth time on Ghana’s update to enhanced response to the coronavirus on Thursday, April, 9 2020, he said the extension of the restriction of movement in the lockdown areas “is a decision that has been taken through the issuance of an executive instrument and will take effect from 1 am on Monday, April 13, 2020.”

According to the president, Ghana has a total of three hundred and seventy-eight (378) tested and confirmed cases of the infection. Out of the total, six (6) deaths has been recorded, four (4) recoveries, two (2) persons are in a critical condition and the remaining three hundred and seventy are minor cases who have been isolated and are either being managed at home or treatment centers.

He further stated that the partial lockdown in Accra and Kumasi had made contact tracing possible with a total number of four hundred and fifty (450) teams.

In relation to contact tracing, he said, out of the total of thirty-seven thousand, four hundred and five (37,405) samples taken, thirty-one thousand, nine hundred and thirty-three (31,933) are in Accra and five thousand, four hundred and seventy-two (5,472) are in Kumasi.

A total of fourteen thousand, six hundred and eleven (14,611) contacts samples collected were tested for the virus in Accra and Kumasi as at on the 8th of April he said.

In Accra, out of eleven thousand, three hundred and eight (11,308) contacts that were tested, fifty-two tested positive making 0.46% and twenty-five (25) out of three thousand, three hundred and three (3,303) tested positive in Kumasi making a percentage of 76.

In total Accra and Kumasi recorded seventy-seven (77) positive tested cases which represents 0.53% out of fourteen thousand, six hundred and eleven (14,611).

President Akuffo Addo mentioned that though the results are encouraging, some ten thousand (10,000) samples are expected to be tested in the coming week this he said will give a clear picture and help in decision making.

He also mentioned that our boarders will still be closed until the situation is under full control.

This, he explained by saying, one thousand and fine (105) of the confirmed cases came from those who were under the mandatory quarantine and tested on their arrival on March 21 and 22.

One hundred and ninety-two from travelers who entered the country before the closure of our borders and their contacts, he stated.

He added that “Out of the three hundred and seventy-eight (378) confirmed cases, seventy-nine percent (79%) of them were imported.”
