Must read

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Andrews Asiamah Amoako, has called on individuals to demonstrate the courage to challenge wrongdoing, uphold moral principles and demand accountability from those entrusted with authority.

He made the call while delivering an address on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who chaired the first edition of the St. John the Baptist Memorial Lecture organised by the Supreme Subordinate Commandery of the Knights of St. John International (KSJI), Ghana, and the Ladies’ Auxiliary.

The lecture, held at Christ the King Parish Hall in Cantonments, Accra, was on the theme “Speaking Truth to Power: Upholding Justice, Morality & National Accountability.”
In the address, Hon. Asiamah Amoako drew attention to the example of St. John the Baptist, who stood firmly for truth and moral principles, even when doing so meant challenging those in positions of authority.

He noted that the saint’s courage in confronting wrongdoing remained a powerful lesson for individuals and institutions, emphasising that authority should not place anyone beyond moral scrutiny.

He cautioned that silence in the face of injustice could allow wrongdoing to persist, stressing that speaking truth to power required courage, integrity and a commitment to the common good.

The Second Deputy Speaker also underscored the importance of accountability, urging individuals to apply the principle fairly and consistently rather than demanding it only from people they disagree with.

He emphasised that those entrusted with public responsibilities must demonstrate transparency, integrity and prudence, particularly in the management of public resources.

However, he cautioned against confusing truth-telling with insults, defamation, rumours or reckless accusations. He stressed that criticism must be guided by facts, fairness and wisdom to ensure that the pursuit of accountability does not undermine responsible public discourse.

The address further highlighted the need for faith to be reflected in practical conduct, noting that moral values must influence how individuals exercise authority, treat others and respond to wrongdoing.

The annual memorial lecture seeks to honour St. John the Baptist by encouraging reflection and action on issues of justice, morality, truth and accountability, while strengthening the role of the Knights and Ladies’ Auxiliary in promoting ethical leadership and service to society.

The event brought together KSJI National Leadership and members from Nigeria, Liberia and Togo, alongside leaders and members of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall, representatives of the Islamic religion in Ghana, and officers of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Also present were the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie; the Auxiliary Bishop of Accra, Most Rev. Anthony Narh Asare; and representatives of the Ga Mantse.

The lecture forms part of efforts by the KSJI and its Ladies’ Auxiliary to encourage individuals to uphold moral values, promote justice and embrace accountability in their personal lives, professional responsibilities and service to the wider community.
