Caritas Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Human Dignity and Service to the Poor

Must read

Caritas Ghana is seeking to strengthen the Catholic Church’s commitment to human dignity, solidarity and service to poor and marginalised persons through its maiden Caritas Week Celebration.

The week-long celebration, scheduled for November 8 to 15, 2026, will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the Church’s charitable mission and encourage greater involvement in addressing humanitarian and social challenges.

The Executive Director of Caritas Ghana, Mr Richard Nyaaba Akurugu, disclosed this during a media briefing at the National Catholic Secretariat in Accra on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The initiative reflects the organisation’s broader mission of promoting the Catholic Church’s social teaching and strengthening its structures for delivering charitable services at national, diocesan and parish levels.

Caritas Ghana’s objectives include contributing to the dignity of the human person, particularly the poor and marginalised, through empowerment and representation, as well as undertaking social action research to improve the delivery of social services.

Established as the development and humanitarian arm of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Caritas Ghana works to coordinate the Church’s response to development and humanitarian challenges while promoting solidarity with vulnerable communities.

The organisation is also guided by principles of human dignity, solidarity and subsidiarity, which emphasise respect for every person, mutual responsibility and the importance of empowering communities to participate in decisions affecting their lives.

Through Caritas Week, the organisation hopes to deepen public understanding of these values and encourage practical expressions of charity towards people in need.

Caritas Ghana’s work reflects the Church’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable people are treated with dignity and supported to participate in the development of their communities. The maiden Caritas Week Celebration is expected to provide an opportunity to renew public awareness of this mission and the role of the Church in addressing social and humanitarian needs.
