The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has called on the global church to return to the foundational principles of prayer, the presence of God, and faith in the name of Jesus.
He made the call in a reflection delivered during the evening session of Day One of the AG World Congress at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Preaching from Acts Chapter 3, where Peter and John encountered a man lame from birth at the Beautiful Gate, Rev. Dr. Wengam described prayer as “the spiritual oxygen of the church and the bridge between the church and heaven,” noting that the early church was anchored on prayer.

He lamented that prayer has become optional for many Christians today, citing research that the average pastor prays only ten minutes a day.
“If we are going to plant one million churches and see revival, we must go back to the blueprint of the early church. We must re-dig the wells of prayer,” he said, referencing Isaac who re-dug the wells of his father.
Rev. Dr. Wengam urged the church to move beyond self-centred prayers to intercession for souls and the advancement of God’s Kingdom, quoting Psalm 2:8, “Ask of Me, and I will give you the nations.”

He also cautioned against replacing the name of Jesus with human methods and theatrics, stressing that the name of Jesus remains more powerful than anointing oil, mantles, or political connections.
“Don’t be afraid to pray for the sick, the blind, the cripple. Assemblies of God believes in the supernatural. Let’s exalt Jesus and brag about Jesus,” he charged.
He concluded by reminding the global fellowship that Assemblies of God is known for sound doctrine, urging members to remain faithful to the Word.
