St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School in Accra is set to launch a fundraising drive as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations to address ageing facilities and improve teaching and learning conditions.
In an interview with Newswatchgh.com, Rev. Fr. Dr George Obeng Appah, headmaster of St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School, noted that some of the school’s facilities have aged over 75 years and require modern, adequate infrastructure necessary for teaching, learning, and student development.
He said, “Aquinas is now 75 years old, and some of our facilities have aged considerably. We need modern and adequate infrastructure to match the quality of education we want to provide.”
According to Fr. Appah, the school needs improved classroom facilities, an appropriate assembly hall and other infrastructure necessary for student development.
“We should not wait until the school reaches a point of crisis before we act. At 75, Aquinas deserves our collective support to renew its infrastructure and strengthen its capacity for the next generations,” he said.
Fr. Appah also said the school is advocating for boarding status from the Ghana Education Service because of the challenges of operating solely as a day school.
He said, “Given our location in the heart of Accra and the challenges associated with operating solely as a day school, boarding status would significantly improve access and create new opportunities for the school. So, the fundraising is not simply about putting up buildings. It is about investing in the future of Aquinas.”
Rev. Fr. Dr. George Obeng Appah highlighted the significance of stakeholders, noting that the “government and the Ghana Education Service also have an important responsibility.”
He said that St. Thomas Aquinas SHS is a public school operating within the national education system and therefore encouraged the government to provide support in infrastructure, staffing, equipment and policy.
He appealed to Old Toms, parents, corporate organizations and the general public to support the school to raise funds for the school’s academic and infrastructural development.
He said, “Aquinas belongs to all of us… If you are an old boy, this is your opportunity to give back to the school that helped shape you. If you are a parent, you are investing in the future of your son.”
The 75th Anniversary launch and fundraising are expected to take place at the Christ the King Hall in Cantonments on 2nd October, 2026.
