The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama has called on churches to strengthen mentorship for young people, support women in their faith and demonstrate greater compassion towards persons with disabilities.

He made the appeal at the closing ceremony of the World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra on Friday, October 16, 2026, where he highlighted the church’s responsibility to support vulnerable groups and strengthen Christian communities.

President Mahama said young people faced numerous challenges that could leave them confused and discouraged, despite the availability of modern technology and other conveniences.

“We need to mentor them, we need to guide them, and let us not lead them to their own devices,” he said.

He urged church leaders and older members to provide guidance and help the younger generation navigate the pressures of contemporary society.

The President also highlighted the contribution of women to the church, describing them as a critical source of spiritual support.

“Our women are the backbone of our church,” he said.

Drawing from his personal experience, he spoke about how he was encouraged at home to prepare for church, using the example to illustrate the influence women could have on the spiritual lives of their families.

He called on the church to strengthen women and support them in their faith.

President Mahama further appealed for greater compassion towards persons with disabilities, noting that they faced challenges that people without disabilities might not fully appreciate.

“Not everybody has the same advantages,” he said, urging Christians to look out for persons with disabilities and respond to their needs with understanding and compassion.

He also reminded the congregation that Christians were expected to follow the example of Jesus Christ, whom he described as compassionate, humble and neither greedy nor selfish.
