Caritas Ghana to host Maiden Caritas Week Celebration 2026

Must read

Caritas Ghana will hold its maiden Caritas Week Celebration from November 8 to 15, 2026, culminating in a national collection on Caritas Sunday, which coincides with the World Day of the Poor.

This was disclosed by the Executive Director of Caritas Ghana, Richard Nyaaba Akurugu, during a media briefing held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 at the National Catholic Secretariat, Accra.

Mr. Akurugu explained that Caritas Ghana works through Diocesan Development Officers (DDOs) and Caritas volunteers at the Parish level to respond to humanitarian needs across the country.

Mr. Akurugu

He cited the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage as an example, where Caritas was on the ground in the affected regions to provide relief to victims.

According to him, Caritas Ghana has already responded to emergencies in at least seven regions this year alone. This includes windstorm disasters in the Upper East and North East regions through Navrongo, and in Yendi and Bimbilla Municipality.

He added that in response to the June 29th flooding, Caritas has completed response in Accra and is currently responding to affected persons in Central, Volta, Western and the Northern Regions.

Mr. Akurugu noted however that all these interventions are currently undertaken through donor funding, which often delays response.

“What we are trying to say is that we want people to know what Caritas is, what it does and to call for more support. Even as we continue to rely on our partners, we want to call for internal collaborators within the Church,” he said.

He called on Catholics and the general public to support the Caritas mission through contributions to the Caritas collection, by signing up as volunteers, and through various in-kind donations to solidify the Church’s act of charity to Brothers and Sisters in need.

The briefing was held in collaboration with the Department of Social Communications (DEPSOCOM). Caritas Week 2026 will be celebrated on the theme “The Lord is the refuge of the poor” (cf. Ps 14:6) with the campaign line “A refuge for the poor: love in action.”
