[Feature] When All Hope is Lost, and Nothing Seems to Work

Must read

Beloved Child of God, what do you do when all hope seems lost, and you feel frustrated, devastated, and fed up with life? Do you turn to Christ, or do thoughts of ending your life begin to overwhelm you?

The Reality of Life

You may have tried every possible means to succeed in life, yet nothing seems to work. You may even have reached the point of wanting to poison yourself just to end your life.

Perhaps you are frustrated and depressed because of a series of failed relationships or marriages.

Perhaps you have been falsely accused and unjustly sentenced, with no opportunity to prove your innocence and no one willing to believe your side of the story.

Imagine a Christian immigrant who travelled abroad only to struggle endlessly in obtaining the necessary resident documents.

Imagine, too, a young couple who lose either the husband or the wife less than six months after their wedding.

Or think of a faithful Christian who has just been diagnosed by a doctor with a terminal illness.

What do you do in situations like these? How does one cope with such overwhelming experiences?

Even in the midst of life’s fiercest storms, there is always a gentle breeze of hope for those who look with the eyes of faith. God never abandons His children. He always provides the grace and strength needed to endure every trial and to overcome every challenge.

Have you ever helped a friend or family member, only to be betrayed or sabotaged in return? Although a friend in need is indeed a friend, it is also true that a friend today can become an enemy tomorrow. Does such an experience make you withdraw from people, unwilling even to smile at them, let alone extend another helping hand?

What to Do in Your Lowest Moments of Life

  1. Entrust Everything to God in Prayer

Whenever you think about what you are going through, remember that someone else’s situation may be even more difficult than yours. No matter how painful your present struggle may be, it will not last forever. Just as the sun does not remain in the sky forever, no situation in life is permanent. As Sacred Scripture reminds us, “There is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). You are neither the first nor will you be the last to experience trials.

Therefore, entrust everything to God through fervent and persevering prayer. Spend time before the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration. Pray the Holy Rosary and request Holy Mass for your intentions. Make novenas, seek the intercession of the Saints, and embrace other devotions like the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Through these means of grace, God strengthens the soul and renews hope.

  1. Never Give Up – Keep Your Faith in Christ

Never give up. Rather, keep your faith firmly rooted in Christ and place your complete trust in Him, for “His steadfast love endures forever” (Psalm 136).

If the Lord could save the one who drank poison, restore hope to the amputee, and strengthen the person diagnosed with a terminal illness, then He can certainly do the same for you. He is the God who acts throughout history, and what He has done for others, He is able to do again in your own life and in His perfect time.

I remember visiting a parishioner who had been absent from church for quite some time. When I arrived at her home, I discovered that she was on the verge of giving her child acid to drink before taking her own life, because she believed that nothing would ever work out for her again.

Today, by the grace of God, she is living in Europe and enjoying a renewed life. Truly, God can transform even the darkest situations into testimonies of hope.

The Akans wisely say:

“Adeɛ nsaeɛ a, yɛmmɔ Nyame soboɔ.”
(“Until the day comes to an end, one should never blame God.”)

They also say:

“Wonwuiɛ a, wonnim deɛ wobɛnya.”
(“As long as you are alive, there is always hope for a better tomorrow.”)

And again:

“Deɛ wawuo na w’asɛe.”
(“It is only the dead for whom hope has completely ended.”)

These wise sayings remind us never to surrender to despair. Instead, let us persevere with hope, place our confidence in Christ Jesus, and trust that He is always at work, even when we cannot yet see the outcome. As long as there is life, there is hope, and with God, no situation is beyond redemption.

  1. Open Up and Share with a Mature and Trusted Christian Brother or Sister

Sometimes, all one needs is a person who will simply listen, put himself or herself in your shoes, and offer reassurance, encouragement, and sound Christian advice.

That person could be your parish priest, counsellor, a trusted relative, or a mature Christian brother or sister worthy of your confidence.

Everyone needs a trusted friend with whom they can freely share their struggles, tears, frustrations, disappointments, depression, and low moments in life, and in turn receive comfort, encouragement, and reassurance.

On one occasion, a man visited me in my office simply to share his life story. At a certain point in our conversation, this strong man began to shed tears uncontrollably as he narrated how his life had been devastated by the uncharitable and opportunistic behaviour of his wife.

Imagine a man of almost sixty years of age weeping continuously for about thirty-five minutes. I simply remained silent and allowed him to pour out his heart until he gradually regained his composure. Sometimes, our silent presence and attentive listening become the greatest consolation we can offer another person.

  1. Sometimes We Simply Need to Weep

Is your heart heavy or burdened?

Experts say that weeping can be therapeutic. It enables us to release the heavy burdens we carry, ease emotional pain, reduce the stress that often leads to sleepless nights and headaches, restore inner peace, and gradually regain emotional balance.

As Christians, we should never be ashamed to cry. Even our Lord Jesus Christ wept (John 11:35). There are moments when tears become a silent prayer before God, expressing what words cannot adequately convey.

  1. Music Is Therapy in Our Lowest Moments

It is fascinating to realise that music often communicates more deeply to our hearts than mere words.

Music has the power to dispel fear, encourage us, strengthen us, and renew our hope in Christ.

I am sure that many of you have heard of the musician Elder Agyare. He recounts how continuous midnight worship sustained him during a difficult court case in which he faced the possibility of imprisonment. Through worship, God brought about his deliverance.

His experience reminds us of Saints Paul and Silas, who praised God while imprisoned. As they worshipped the Lord, the prison doors were opened, and God manifested His saving power (Acts 16:25–26).

Whenever you find yourself unable to pray and all you can do is shed tears, enter into worship and praise. Trust in the mighty hand of God, for He is always able to bring liberation, healing, restoration, and renewed hope.

Conclusion

Beloved in Christ,

During our darkest moments, it is often difficult to find people on whom we can truly lean. Even so, let us remain steadfast in our Catholic faith, firmly convinced that Christ always has the final word. He alone possesses the power to transform our hopeless situations into testimonies of hope, as we keep our eyes fixed on His Cross – the enduring sign of hope, sacrificial love, redemption, and the promise of new life.

As members of the Church, let us never hesitate to seek the help that God lovingly provides through her pastoral ministry. Make good use of your parish counselling services where available, approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) regularly, and seek spiritual direction whenever you need guidance and support. These are precious gifts through which the Church accompanies God’s people with compassion, wisdom, and hope.

If you find yourself struggling with persistent sadness, depression, or thoughts of harming yourself, do not suffer in silence. Reach out immediately to a trusted priest, religious, qualified counsellor, family member, or a trusted friend. Seeking help is not a sign of weak faith; rather, it is often an act of courage, humility, and hope. God frequently works through the love, wisdom, and care of those He places in our lives.

Above all, never forget that no darkness is greater than the light of Christ. No wound is beyond His healing, no burden is too heavy for His grace, and no situation is beyond His redeeming love. Continue to trust in Him, persevere in prayer, remain close to the Sacraments, and allow the Lord to renew your hope day by day.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, accompany you with her maternal intercession. May St. Joseph, the Saints, and all the Angels pray for you and strengthen you in every trial until Christ grants you the peace, joy, and victory that come from trusting completely in Him.
