The Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp Ghana has called on Christians to eschew greed which he defined as the act of cheating the poor is the root of corruption.

In a homily on Good Friday, April 10, 2020, he said “My brothers and sisters; Greed gives birth to corruption. If we wish to stop corruption in or country, let each one go deeper and deal with that “bottomless” desire to look for more, to take advantage of the other, to acquire what does not belong to them. We cannot bring corruption to an end if we do not go to the root,” he added.

He pointed out that corruption is the ”vice called greed. It is nurtured in our individual hearts. We must first deal with this individually then we can collectively fight corruption.”

Adding, he said, “When we do this, then like the Apostle Paul we can say, “I have fought the fight to the end, I have run the race to the finish” (2 Tim 4:7) and then with Jesus we can triumphantly say “It is finished”; “I have accomplished the mission you gave me’. Until then, we have work to do.”

The Ghanaian Archbishop said very often people do not get satisfied with what they have and would go the extra mile to cheat even the poorest of the poor in society.

Reflecting on the death of Christ, Archbishop Kwofie admonished Christians to be concerned about the results of their actions and inactions.

”Pardon me, I want to ask you just one favour this Good Friday: Let us uproot from our heart that desire to acquire more and more to the disadvantage of the poor and needy. It is called the sin of greed.  It is one of the capital sins because it generates more sins. It is the root of corruption,” he said.

He noted that ”It is tearing our society apart.  We are never satisfied and so we steal. We appropriate what does not belong to us. We don’t care whether our actions will lead others and families to remain hungry. We don’t care whether our actions will impoverish people and lead companies and organizations to collapse.”.

The Archbishop further stated that very often, corruption is attributed to government officials but, there is need to fight corruption first in every life and household for the impact to be felt at the national level.
