The Agonamanhene, Obirukomfo Anokye Boakye II, has pledged to provide land for developmental projects by the Catholic Church in Agona, Ashanti Region, urging the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) to consider the traditional area in its future development plans.

He made the pledge on Saturday, November 7, when a delegation of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference paid a courtesy call on him at his palace in Agona as part of activities marking the Conference’s 2026 Plenary Assembly.

The Agonamanhene commended the Catholic Church for its longstanding contributions to national development and expressed his readiness to support initiatives that would bring further development to the area.

“Let me know what project you have in mind and I’ll provide the land,” he assured the delegation.

Agona holds historical significance within the Asante Kingdom and is traditionally associated with the ancestry of the renowned priest and spiritual figure, Okomfo Anokye.

The visit, led by the Bishop of Obuasi, Most Rev. John Yaw Afoakwa, was to formally announce the Bishops’ presence in the traditional area and seek the traditional ruler’s blessings for the 2026 plenary assembly.

The annual Plenary Assembly, scheduled to run from November 3 to 14 at the Divine Providence Pastoral Centre, Jamasi, in the Konongo – Mampong Diocese will officially commence with an opening ceremony on Monday, November 9.

The assembly is being held under the theme, “Communion, Participation and Mission: Preparing the Catholic Church in Ghana for Her 150th Anniversary.”

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Bishop Afoakwa expressed appreciation to the Agonamanhene for his warm reception and willingness to support the Church’s developmental initiatives.

He said courtesy call forms part of the Conference’s broader engagements with traditional authorities during the 2026 plenary assembly in Konongo-Mampong Diocese.

The Bishops subsequently expressed gratitude to the Agonamanhene for his hospitality and offered prayers for God’s guidance, strength, knowledge and wisdom in his leadership, while invoking God’s blessings upon his family and the people under his traditional authority.
