Precious Akosua Aboama Nkrumah, the 18-year-old Lady of the Altar at Ss. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church, Teshie, will be laid to rest on Friday, August 14, 2026 at La after a burial Mass at St. Maurice Catholic Church, La.
This was announced by the family on Monday, August 10, 2026 after all necessary documentation was completed.
Mr. Yohannes Nkrumah, the father of Akosua, noted that the Burial Mass and Interment cannot be held at Teshie due to the ban on noise making and restrictions on funerals which took effect on Monday, August 10, 2026.
Background
Akosua, a devoted Mass Server, was diagnosed with a Brain Tumor in April 2026 which required urgent surgical intervention.
Due to the financial burden on the family, the major surgical procedure was delayed until resources were mobilized by the Old Knights and Ladies of the Altar, Church members, friends and loved ones home and abroad.
The total cost of GHS 80,861.00 was needed and the amount raised supported the surgery and the rest of Akosua’s medical care until her demise on August 4.
Community Response
Upon hearing the news, members of the Old Mass Servers fraternity immediately rallied together, driven by the core values of Faith, Service, and Compassion.
Within days, a fundraising drive was launched across WhatsApp platforms, Facebook, church groups, and personal networks. This drew overwhelming donations from Old Servers in Ghana and the diaspora, current Mass Servers, school children, parishioners, and sympathizers.
An initial deposit of GHS 70,000 of the support was presented to the family at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in the presence of her parents and some Senior Mass Servers, while the fundraising exercise continued.
Speaking on behalf of the Old Knights and Ladies of the Altar – Teshie, Mr. Robert Dela Mawuenyegah, the fundraising lead, said:
“This is the spirit of KNOLTA. We are one family in Christ. We served together at the altar, and we bear one another’s burdens in difficult times. On behalf of the Old Knights and Ladies of the Altar, we are deeply grateful to everyone who donated, shared, and prayed for Akosua. She underwent surgery and fought courageously for 10 days in the ICU at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, but the Lord called her home on August 4, 2026. We commit her gentle soul to God and we continue to stand with her family in prayer.”
A Call to Continued Support
This act of charity has also sparked conversations among older Knights and Ladies of the Altar about forming a more structured welfare support system for altar servers and vulnerable young people in our Church.
The Old Knights and Ladies of the Altar have, over the years, been quietly supporting Young Mass Servers through their educational and health needs, and remain committed to continuing this work of service.
The family of Akosua Aboama Nkrumah have expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Church, individual donors and supporters, and have asked for continued prayers for them during this period of grief.
The Nkrumah and allied Families extend an invitation to family, friends and loved ones to join them on Friday, August 14, 2026 where the mortal remains will be received at 7am at St. Maurice Catholic Church, La.
