Beyond COVID-19: Ten Lessons For Life After The Virus

Must read

(1) When this era of COVID-19 is over (for, it will surely be over), we must never again take any yawning and coughing and sneezing for granted. These are the very signs of life itself; signs of vitality and refreshment.

(2) When this period is over, we must never again take for granted, any gentle touch from a fellow human, any warm embrace, any loving pat on the shoulder. These are the very signs of conviviality, affinity, and fraternity.

(3) When this is over, we must never again take for granted, any loving wave and handshake, any friendly fist bump (‘big-up’). These are the very symbols of love, fellow-feeling, and good neighbourliness.

(4) When this is over, we must never again downplay any deep breath and mild heave. We must never again underestimate the very beating (pulsation) of the heart itself. Those are signs of renewal and restoration to life.

(5) When this is over, we must never again belittle large crowds of people, and huge gatherings at social functions. These are the very emblems of tranquility, happiness and oneness.

(6) When this brutish rule of COVID-19 and its concomitant mandatory quarantine is over (it surely will), may we never again underrate the ‘goodness’ of local staple foods like ‘gari’ (the students’ companion) and local alcoholic drinks like ‘akpeteshie’.

(7) When this ends, may we never downplay very ordinary day-to-day activities like washing of hands and covering of nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and the must of good personal hygiene.

(8) When this is over, may we never again de-emphasize ordinary feelings of uneasiness: headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, dry cough, throat ache, and all.

(9) When this is over may we never again exhibit gross disdain toward frontline workers like men and women in uniform (the security services and their apparatuses), the media fraternity, health practitioners, political leaders, and the heroic religious missionaries of charity.

(10) Ultimately, when this is over, may we never again call the name of the Lord God in vain, for, he has proved himself superior to and master over human ingenuity and Science.
